State Court seeking alternatives to high legal costs

On Behalf of | Dec 4, 2015 | Divorce |

It is no secret that legal assistance of any kind will benefit individuals going through a legal family issue, such as divorce, child support arrangements or alimony. It is also likely not a secret that most individuals struggle to afford this legal aid that is often so vital to presenting a well-developed case and receive the custodial and support orders for which the situation truly calls. Fortunately for Texas residents, help is on the way.

The fact that legal assistance is important to such Family Law cases is so widely known and acknowledged, especially by those in the legal profession, that the Texas Supreme Court itself is undertaking efforts to increase access. One former chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court went so far as to call the issue a “crisis” for the state. The answer to the crisis will hopefully be discovered by a commission of nearly 20 individuals, who have been tasked with working out possible solutions over the course of the next year.

The problem stems from the fact that while legal assistance is often so crucial to decisions and issues that can affect entire families, it is difficult to procure for many Texas residents. Until now, only low-income residents have truly been the focus of efforts to increase legal access, but the courts have finally had to acknowledge that even middle class families require assistance of some kind.

Hopefully, our state’s legal system is able to come up with an alternative to provide more legal aid to more families because the stakes are simply too high. Trying to tackle divorce proceedings on your own can lead to you rarely seeing your child again, or paying a massive portion of your salary in spousal support. If you are going through a legal family crisis, try not to neglect legal aid simply due to cost. Enlisting the aid of an attorney can be crucial to your case.
