An attorney may help prove you deserve alimony

On Behalf of | Aug 7, 2015 | Divorce |

Divorces can be stressful, especially when both spouses cannot agree on certain issue such as property division, child custody or alimony. Alimony, when it is requested, isn’t always awarded. Just because one person feels as though they deserve to be paid a certain amount every month, doesn’t mean that their former spouse or the courts will agree with them. When it comes to alimony disputes, people request it for various reasons. Sometimes, the reason for requesting it is valid, while other times, it is obvious that they are just trying to get more money out of their spouse.

People may request alimony for the following reasons:

  • Person has disabled child they are caring for.
  • Person is unable to support her or himself due to mental or physical disability.
  • Person is unable to bring in a sufficient amount of income after a marriage of at least 10 years in duration.

Before a person can be awarded alimony, they may need to prove that they need it. For example, if there is in fact a child they are caring for who has a disability, they may be asked to present the court with proof of this disability. This is where an attorney would be helpful because some are familiar with disputes over alimony and may know how to help you prove that it is needed. If there is a chance that one can assist you with getting spousal support, it may be wise to hire someone to stand by your side and fight with you.

If you are going through a divorce and believe that your spouse should pay you alimony, you may want to contact an attorney. There are knowledgeable attorneys at The Law Office of Lisa A. Vance who may be able to help you. With you not being able to support yourself financially, you deserve to be awarded alimony, at least until you can get back on your feet and become independent once again.
